Sustainable Alternatives to Traditional Bricks

Alternative bricks and other environmentally friendly concrete products are rapidly gaining popularity across Bangladesh to meet the increasing demand for housing and infrastructure.

These innovative solutions are playing a vital role in protecting topsoil and agricultural lands, which are traditionally used for manufacturing clay-burnt bricks.

According to industry data, Bangladesh produces approximately 172 million pieces of brick annually, with a yearly growth rate of 2–3%. However, around 95% of brick kilns across the country still operate using highly polluting fixed chimney technologies, while only about 150 out of 6,600 brick kilns have adopted modern, cleaner production systems.

Brick kilns are among the leading causes of soil degradation, rendering large areas of fertile land barren. A recent Department of Environment study reveals that 58.5% of Dhaka’s total air pollution originates from emissions produced by brick kilns.

In contrast, concrete building products offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. Using these products instead of traditional clay bricks can reduce construction costs by up to 20% while significantly minimizing environmental impact.

At CDC, we are committed to promoting sustainable construction practices by producing eco-friendly bricks and blocks that align with modern development needs and environmental standards.
